EGames 2007 - The Day After

November 19th, 2007 Brett

It’s Monday the 19th which means that if you’re thinking of coming to EGames 2007 then you probably shouldn’t, because it’s over. The Australian Gamer crew and I had a swell time and I think we’ve all learnt something over the last couple of days. Personally I’d like to think that I won’t go 72 hours without sleep again in my life but since the event was such a success then I’d imagine we’ll be doing the whole thing again this time next year.

Developer Keynote Speeches

November 18th, 2007 Brett

While I’m goofing off with people in the line there are a whole heap of other slightly more serious presentations going on here at EGames. Thankfully the RMITV crew have camera people absolutely everywhere catching the presentations and making me look professional in my coverage. Here’s Auran discussing Fury, Nintendo showing off Mario Galaxy and Endless Ocean and some hands on time with Ratchet And Clank.

The following people are my new best friends : Kye Lewis, Darren McAuliffe, Emma Davies, Angeline Lim, Sam Lee and Dean Berlingeri. Thanks for the footage guys.

The First Guy In Line

November 18th, 2007 Brett

Some people are driven by ambition…

It was probably dark when this guy started on his trip to EGames this morning. He didn’t care.

It was probably raining and the wind probably cut through his wet tracksuit top. He didn’t care.

He probably walked many miles across hobo infested parkland and swampy marshes. He didn’t care.

He was probably hungry, maybe he caught small animals and insects along the way to give his body sustenance, maybe he really wanted to stop for a Subway Roll and some cookies. His stomach was rumbling and his legs were weary but he didn’t care.

Nothing stopped him, nothing swayed his resolve to climb the summit and this morning at 10 am he achieved what most of us only dare to dream of. He became the first in line for EGames.

This post is a solute to everyone who has stumbled and fallen, only to pick themselves back up and continue their chase for that beautiful butterfly called life. This is your chance to follow in the footsteps of these brave men and women already here at the Expo. If you don’t come to EGames today then it will be all over for another year and you’ll be left alone with only the ugly spectre of regret to keep you company.

Brett Vs MasterChief Vs Haze Dude Vs Mario - Fight!

November 17th, 2007 Brett

When I was boy, mascots in gaming were everything. Your company needed a mascot or fluffy character to sell systems and games and if you didn’t have one then your name was Panasonic 3D0 and your executives were probably handing back the keys to their 911 Porsche’s.

Times have changed however. Today it’s all about celebrity sports signings and rap band endorsements. That’s why I was so happy to finally see some mascots here at EGames that I decided to try punching them all to see who was the toughest.

I’m not sure what the Haze dude’s name is, but it’s now “Haze Dude Got Punched”. Anyway, I think “Haze Dude” might have suffered from some field of vision issues in that helmet because he never even saw me coming.

Mario was a bit tougher to take down. That plumber has got some big hands which he used to claw at my face whilst I tried to slap his big nose. I’m calling this one a draw.

Masterchief didn’t even turn up for his scheduled interview/fight, instead choosing to send this banner as a way of taunting me. I wasn’t scared of your inflatable head Masterchief, I’m sure as hell not afraid of your threats to “Go Solid”.

So, at this stage at least, Mario is still the toughest gaming mascot around. I’ll do my best to try slap any mascots that may turn up at EGames tomorrow, even if it means updating the site from my hospital bed. Until then, watch out for men with big noses wearing red hats.

EGames Main Stage And Developer Video’s

November 17th, 2007 Brett

It’s 3:30pm which means that we are half way through EGames Melbourne.

Perhaps you had a wedding to go to this morning. Maybe it was your own wedding and if so congratulations on your special day. Perhaps you drank 14 Jager Bombs last night and ended up sleeping in a park with hobo’s who stole your wallet. I’m not sure why you haven’t made it here yet but I do know that you’ve missed out on a whole heap of good stuff.

Thankfully my wonderful friends at RMITV have captured some video footage of the Expo including interviews with Eminence and Insomniac. I’ll share them with you here as long as you promise to come down to the Exhibition Centre tomorrow to see everything live in person.

Thanks again to Kye Lewis, Darren McAuliffe, Emma Davies, Angeline Lim, Sam Lee and Dean Berlingeri for providing this material.

Helmet Vs Sea Container - Round 1 - Fight!

November 17th, 2007 Brett

It’s Saturday morning at EGames Melbourne and the Expo is packed with Gamers checking out the latest titles, as well as strippers who have accidently walked in from nextdoors Sexpo Convention.

In addition to the lost pole dancers, Sony and Microsoft have gone all out at EGames with elaborate displays to encourage customers to spend 1.2 times the average weekly wage on one of their next gen consoles. Sony invested on a giant sea container filled with games whilst Microsoft have a massive inflatable MasterChief head.

Oracle and I decided to pit the Microsoft and Sony stands against each other in a head to sea container battle to the death. Which of these corporate megaliths would have it’s still beating heart ripped out of its chest and which would live on to enjoy eternal life in the ongoing company of promiscuous ladies? Watch the exciting video to find out!

Guitar Hero Idol

November 15th, 2007 Yug

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock came out last week, and to celebrate this particular event, the organisers of eGames are putting on a bit of a competition that really should be a no-brainer to anyone who has ever played a Guitar Hero game (and if you aren’t one of these people, stop reading this right now, go out, and play the game … preferably while drinking and with a big group of friends).

Wide Open Throttle’s Flat to the Floor Racing Simulator

November 15th, 2007 Samo

It’s not often that you have a properly original idea, let alone the know-how and tools to make it all come together. For Dean Wiltshire and Glen Crumplin the moons did align and as a result of frustration followed by a series of prototypes and trial and error they came up with what I truly believe is one of the best gaming products since the NES Light Gun.

Drinking Drinks, Looking At A Stick

November 14th, 2007 Brett

In the past I may have been guilty of getting a little carried away and a little worked up over certain things. When Arcade Gaming Australia let me know that they’d be showing off the range of Tank Stick Joysticks at the EGames Expo I once again felt pang of stupidity that normally means something moronic is going to happen and I’m going to end up getting arrested…again.

Tank Stick

I couldn’t possibly wait another four days to see the Tank Stick in Melbourne. I would have to create my own Tank Stick here in Perth, probably out of a small stick and a big tank and anything else I had laying around the yard.

The first part of the operation would be to find a large army tank. My initial attempts to infiltrate an army barracks failed, probably because my undercover army name of Major Pain was not so much stupid as also untrue. I’m not Major Pain, in fact, I’m not even Minor Pain. With access to the army denied I would need to source another sort of tank.
